Community Health Education for Woman    
  Location: Hajjah governorate, Hirba district    

 

The aims of the project is to improve the health of the people in this district by trying to reduce common illness and to educate women on the role they can play in improving the general health of their family and the community.

Courses were offered to women in the selected communities concerning health issues, the environment and social classes. These classes included first aid training to selected women in the selected communities, which they were expected in turn to teach to others in their communities.

The Hirba district consists of 10 villages with approximately 2 000 people living in these villages.

 

   
       
       
       
       
       
       
       
 

Community Health Unit Consultation

   
  Location: Hajjah governorate; Mubyan district, Hirba, Ad Dheeba and Jahiliy.    
  The aim of the project is to train Health Unit staff to conduct complete physical examinations, diagnose, and treat patients with appropriate medications and therapies including patient education and to focus on mother and child health and preventative care.

A number of Health Unit staff has been trained in use of basic tools for physical examination and the selection of medicines. A measles outbreak was reported to the Ministry of Public Health and Population in 2004, as well as some ESL teaching to medical personnel.

The villages where work is being done serves a community of roughly 8 000 people, including surrounding villages without their own Health Unit.

 

   
       
       
       
       
       
       
       

 

Continuing Education for Medical Personnel    

 

Location: Aden and Lahaj governorates    
  The aims of the project is to prepare and assist Nurse Educators in facilitating teaching opportunities for Continuing Education in Government Health Facilities in Lahaj and Aden and to provide specialized Nursing Education Projects as needed by the Health offices of Aden and Lahaj.

This project is new, but will benefit medical students from both governorates as well as selected nurses and physicians - who in turn will pass on their knowledge to others in the governorate.

 

   
       
       
       
       
       
       
       

 

Empowering Rural woman for Healthy Communities    
  Location: Dhamar governorate; elHada' district    
  Rural women are the focus of this project because they have less access to health services than any other sector of society. The aim of this project is to train female health workers to improve the situation of women in their communities. This aim was pursued by visiting Health Units in a number of villages and training the female health professionals there and improving their clinical skills.

There is an estimated 10 000 people living in the project area, most of whom are woman and children. A marked increase in visits to the community by health professionals is just one of the visible results of this project that has been active for 4 years now.

 

   

 

     
       
       
       
       
       
       

 

 Laboratory Consultancy Project    
  Location: Taiz and Ibb governorates; Taiz, Ibb  and Jibla    
  The aim of the project is to improve the level of laboratory performance in government facilities by assisting in training and improving quality control measures.
The project was initialized in 2004, and has
directly impacted the skills and expertise of the 10 lab workers in Jibla 'Peace' Hospital and approximately 4 lab workers at an unofficial consultancy but in the long term, should benefit all patients that are examined by laboratory tests at any hospital that is involved.

It is planned that the project should extend to at least 4 government run hospitals in these areas.

 

   
       
       
       
       
       
       

 

 Pharmacy Education Project    
  Location: Taiz governorate, Taiz city    
  The aims of the project are join the Ministry of Health in its stated goal of providing continuing medical education to medical professionals (specifically, pharmacists and their employees) and to improve the baseline level of health in the community by lowering the numbers of dispensing errors and higher levels of patient education by the pharmacists and pharmacy employees.

According to the government, Taiz governorate has the biggest concentration of pharmacists in the whole of Yemen, which makes this an ideal location for this project to be launched in.

The project is still in the development phase, and a baseline survey is currently being undertaken to gauge the educational level and training need of pharmacists in the Taiz area. The actual training of pharmacists and pharmacy workers is planned to commence in early 2005.

 

   
       
       
       
       
       
       

 

 Zaza Health Project    
  Location: Taiz governorate, Al Zaza village    
  The aims of the project is to survey the area to assess the specific needs and prevailing diseases, to advise, assist and train the existing medical workers in an ongoing capacity and to provide when and as possible, expertise in various medical fields.

ICS has sent several medical teams to the area to assist the local health staff there with training and with resources. There are estimated to be around 12,000 people in the area of Al Zaza, comprising of around 23 village areas, spread over a large mountainous area.  The village areas range from 15 minutes walk to three hours walk from the Health Centre located in Al Zaza village.
